Dear Friends,

Almost a week ago our country was shocked by the tragic events at Fort Hood and our prayers and thoughts are with the grieving families of those killed and with the wounded. It is unconscionable that our soldiers were attacked and harmed on a U.S .Army base where they should be safe from the dangers they have already faced or will face on the battlefield.

The events at Ft. Hood are a stark reminder that our soldiers are always on duty. They face dangers while the majority of us live far removed from such risks. And today, on Veterans Day, we reaffirm a solemn promise that we will remember and honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces – past and present. Today we honor all those who have served and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Throughout our country’s history, there are countless stories of sacrifice and heroism from every war. Our living veterans can attest to that fact. Many heroic actions go unnoticed except by those who survive those perilous moments and live on. Our military is not boastful. Most would probably prefer the quiet approval and respect of their fellow brothers in arms than a parade in their honor. However, today we do not let them escape without knowing our Nation’s gratitude. We commemorate them, we thank them, we wave the American flag and we hold events in their honor – and yet it pales in comparison to all that our veterans have done for us.

To all those who have served – today is your day. Our country salutes you. May God Bless you and May God Bless America.

Sincerely,

KEN CALVERT
Member of Congress

In an effort to keep dangerous terrorists out of California, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack launched an online petition calling on President Obama to keep Guantanamo Bay detainees from being transferred to the State of California.

“We as Californians need to band together to let the Administration and the Majority in Congress know that we do not want these dangerous criminals in our prisons or on our streets,” said Bono Mack. “I join with the majority of Americans in being outraged by the Administration’s decision to bring deadly terrorists to U.S. soil without a clear plan that would ensure our safety.”

“It is clear that the Majority in Washington is willing to score political points at the expense of the safety and security of the American people. By signing this petition, we can take a stand for our community and keep California from being a place to detain some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world.”

Bono Mack notes that about 1 in 7 terrorist detainees released from Guantanamo Bay returns to participate in terrorist activities. Calling attention to the severe threat of transferring these terrorists to U.S. soil, Bono Mack co-sponsored the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act (H.R. 2294), which requires the Obama Administration to seek the permission of state governors and legislatures before transferring any terrorists to their respective states. To date, House Democratic leadership has blocked this legislation from coming up for a vote.

The petition to keep GITMO detainees out of California can be found on Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack’s website:

CRP Praises California Republican House Members for Opposing Pelosi’s Government Health Care Bill

SACRAMENTO — Citing the higher taxes and massive expansion of government control over individual health choices that will result from Nancy Pelosi’s health care bill, California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring tonight praised the members of the state’s Republican delegation in the House of Representatives for voting unanimously in opposition.

“California’s Republican Members of Congress tonight stood together on the side of the American people and against a giant, costly new health care bureaucracy that will transfer decisions about Americans’ health out of the hands of patients and doctors and into thousands of bureaucrats’ little cubicles in Washington DC,” said California Republican Chairman Ron Nehring.

“Nancy Pelosi’s legislative monstrosity will make health care more expensive for families, raise taxes, cut Medicare, and put bureaucrats in between doctors and patients. Other than that, it’s a great bill,” he added. “Republicans will continue to support fiscally responsible health care reforms that empower patients and doctors, not bureaucrats, trial lawyers and tax collectors.”

California is represented by 19 Republican Members of Congress, each of whom voted against the Pelosi bill this evening.

“Tonight’s vote demonstrates Democrats have no interest in learning the lessons of the 2009 elections that gave Republicans control of two governor’s offices plus many state and local government posts. As the Democrats lurch further to the left, we’ll seize the opportunity to teach those same lessons again in 2010,” Nehring said.

Dear Friends,

This weekend Congress is voting on the House Democratic Leadership health care bill and I want to know how you would vote. Please click here to take a quick one question survey.

There are a number of reasons why I oppose the bill: the over one trillion dollar price tag, tax increases, a public option that will crowd out private insurance, no verification to prevent enrollment of illegal immigrants, and the creation of massive government bureaucracies and mandates.

I wholeheartedly support improving our current system. However, in my opinion government-run health care is not the answer. We should not rush into what I believe are expensive and radical experiments when targeted, bipartisan solutions are possible.

Sincerely,

KEN CALVERT
Member of Congress

Newport Beach, CA- The Newport Beach Police Employees Association (NBPEA) and Political Action Committee representing 185 Members, formally announced their endorsement of Sen. Tom Harman for California State Attorney General for the June 8, 2010 Republican Primary.

“Based on our political action process, your outreach and working with us, philosophical support for public safety, impressive background and service to our community and the County of Orange, viable campaign have led us to endorse your candidacy,” noted the endorsement letter from NBPEA President Dave Syvock, Vice-President Bill Beverly and Treasurer Christine Salenko.

In the State Senate and Assembly, Tom Harman has been an advocate for tough-on-crime measures and legislation. He is a strong proponent of California’s death penalty law and in 2008 introduced SB 315 that if enacted would have sped up the long and tedious process needed to ultimately carry out justice against criminals on death row. Tom has joined with law enforcement organizations statewide in vigorously opposing the early release of tens of thousands of felons back into California communities, and he was a key vote in law enforcement’s effort to limit the availability of pseudoephedrine (which is directly linked to California’s explosive methamphetamine problem).

Sen. Harman has already received numerous notable endorsements including Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, former Secretary of State and ‘Three Strikes’ author Bill Jones, Congressman Ed Royce, Congressman Kevin McCarthy, former Senate Republican Leader Jim Brulte, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, former Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, Orange County Supervisors Patricia Bates and Janet Nguyen and Los Angeles County Supervisors Mike Antonovich and Don Knabe.

It’s official: the Republican Party is back.

Certainly the highest profile victories this week were the governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey: huge wins for our team, particularly New Jersey, an overwhelmingly Democrat state where the incumbent seeking re-election was defeated.

Meanwhile, the margin in the Virginia governor’s race reached landslide proportions. Our party also scored victories that were overshadowed by the governor’s races, such as electing a Republican to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Here in California, John Garamendi’s margin in the liberal 10th district was barely half of the Democratic registration advantage. For the incumbent Lieutenant Governor of the state to be held to a 10-point win in an 18-point Democrat district in Nancy Pelosi’s back yard is another sign of Democrat weakness in 2009. In addition, Garamendi’s relentless attacks on Republican David Harmer in the closing days of the campaign showed just how concerned they were in a district Barack Obama won by 31 points. Special thanks to Tom Del Beccaro for his tireless, day-in-day-out work to support David Harmer and his campaign. The volunteer turnout was extraordinary and made the race a competitive one.

We’re tracking victories that took place at the local level in California. For example, we won a Republican majority in the city that’s home to the San Mateo County seat (Redwood City), defeated tax increases in Ventura County, and more.

REPUBLICAN SELF-IDENTIFICATION ON THE RISE. Our voter registration initiative is key to taking advantage of these rising Republican fortunes. With more than 50 Republican groups signed up for our program we’re moving ahead aggressively with voter registration. Timing here is crucial. Republican self-identification has risen substantially since January, and we want to take advantage of that trend.

LOOKING TO 2010. Next year’s campaign will be dominated by two marquee races in California: Governor and U.S. Senate.

In the governor’s race, it’s ironic that the party that likes to lecture everyone about diversity is down to just one candidate for governor, and he has not even declared.

Our Republican candidates will no doubt be focused on winning the nomination in June. As a result, we will take on the role of talking about Jerry Brown’s record of failure from the last time he was let near the governor’s office. We have excellent candidates seeking our party’s nomination and we’re looking forward to teaming up with the ultimate nominee to deliver victory for California in November.

In the U.S. Senate race, as of this week we have a contested Republican primary there and we will similarly keep the heat on Barbara Boxer, who continues to show she is no Dianne Feinstein. She is deeply divisive and in an extraordinarily weak position for an 18-year incumbent seeking re-election. We have very strong and capable Republicans seeking our U.S. Senate nomination and we will keep the pressure on Barbara Boxer all the way through next November.

I traveled to Los Angeles Thursday night for dinner with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Republican donors. We discussed the emerging opportunities for our party in 2010, as well as the serious problems the Obama Administration is experiencing in trying to enact its agenda.

Early Saturday morning I met with volunteers and David Harmer at his headquarters in Walnut Creek. The hard work by thousands of volunteers and the well run Harmer campaign made this House race a competitive one, right in Nancy Pelosi’s back yard.

Later that day I joined San Mateo County Chairman Michael Schwab, donors and local elected officials for a dinner to discuss today’s rapidly changing political environment and plans for expanding our party’s reach in the Bay Area.

Tuesday night I joined the Republican Party of Orange County in Costa Mesa to watch the returns come in. After the polls closed, I discussed the results on the Kevin James radio show on KRLA in Los Angeles, reviewing how these victories help set the table Republican advancements in 2010.

On Wednesday morning we briefed our Golden State Leadership Team donors with a briefing conference call, updating them on the final results of the November 3 elections, and reviewing all the leading political indicators and how they are all favoring our team.

Later that day I was joined by Assemblywoman Diane Harkey as we recorded this week’s CRP podcast. In just a few weeks the new CRP podcast has drawn a substantial number of subscribers through iTunes and is a common download on our website, underscoring the importance of this new media.

As always, I’d like to hear from you. What are you hearing? What are we doing well? What do we need to improve? Send me an email. Your feedback is very important.
